#BlackLivesMatter: K-8 Distance Learning Activities for Justice for George Floyd

In these Distance Learning Activities, students and you will learn about and process: Black Lives Matter, racial injustice, and the murder of George Floyd. To do this, you will use discussions and videos or read alouds. Then, students will get the chance to take action and stand up for Black Lives Matter and George Floyd by picking a Black Lives Matter Project to do. There are four choices for them to pick from including: art, writing, and letter writing.

In this post, we are going to give support in how to develop the reading skill of Making Text-to-Self Connections in your K-12 students at home. Connecting is an important skill for all readers to develop because it helps students build a great joy for reading and think critically about what is happening in the book and why authors do certain things. We have included books and questions/activities for ALL ages, Kindergarten to 12th Grade!

Colorful Pages at Home: Introduction

Considering all of this, we are creating a series of blog posts called, “Colorful Pages at Home”. During this series, we will be posting several blog posts with a diverse book list and discussion questions focusing on a specific reading skill. We have created a Colorful Pages Lesson Plan surrounding Kelly DiPucchio's book for Grades 2-4. The lesson plan is aligned to Common Core State Standards for all three of those grades and can be easily aligned to your state's social studies standards. In this lesson, students discuss and research the question, “What is the US Presidential Election?” using Grace for President and a KWL (Know-Wonder/Want-Learn) Chart.
