We are SO excited to launch our FIRST Colorful Pages Lesson Plan!
I debated which book to feature for our first lesson plan and I actually started writing a lesson plan for We March, by Shane W. Evans… however, that is now turning into a UNIT plan, which we will be releasing in the next month. Because of the time that it is taking to develop our We March Unit Plan, I decided to release a lesson plan that I have taught several times within my own classroom.
This lesson plan uses the book Grace for President, by Kelly DiPucchio. Grace for President features a Black girl named Grace asking her teacher a very important question about the US Presidents: “WHERE ARE ALL THE GIRLS?” When Grace learns that a woman has never been elected as a US President, she is becomes rightly frustrated and confused. Then, she declares that she will run for President! Her class decides to hold a class election to elect a class president and Grace decides to run. Grace for President would be categorized as a Representation Book on The Spectrum for Multicultural Literature because Grace’s race and culture is not explicitly explored or challenged in the book.
I absolutely love this book because of the brilliant writing and illustrations, but mostly because of the diverse representation. This book could have easily featured a girl from the dominant culture, BUT, instead it features a girl of color in a position of power! Love it!
The Lesson Plan
We have created a Colorful Pages Lesson Plan surrounding Kelly DiPucchio’s book for Grades 2-4. The lesson plan is aligned to Common Core State Standards for all three of those grades and can be easily aligned to your state’s social studies standards.
In this lesson, students discuss and research the question, “What is the US Presidential Election?” using Grace for President and a KWL (Know-Wonder/Want-Learn) Chart. This book challenges students’ critical thinking and research skills because they have to pull out true facts using a picture book that explains the US Presidential Election through a fictional story. At the end of the lesson, students will summarize their learning on an Exit Ticket provided in this lesson plan that has a clear rubric for grading.

Grace for President in Action!
I have taught this lesson several times and it has always been really interesting to see what my students already know and what they learn because of our research. When teaching this lesson, be prepared to talk about how this is a fiction book, but has non-fiction facts. It may be hard for students to pull out the true facts, at first, but it is a great opportunity for them to practice their critical thinking skills.
This picture is from the KWL Chart (excuse the “What” instead of “Wonder”, they are interchangeable) that my 2016-2017 Second Grade Class collaborated on! They loved this lesson, especially because the 2016 Election was occurring when we did this lesson in September. This lesson and booked helped us have some courageous conversations before and especially after the 2016 Election.
Our kiddos know what is happening around them! I believe that teaching students (even young students) about the US Presidential Election and our democratic processes is crucial. We want to empower them to take part in their civil rights, such as voting. In addition, we want to show our students of color that it is possible for them to become an elected official. Representative books and lessons featuring people of color can help us achieve this!
